Commerce was incorporated to protect its industrial land and remains a manufacturing, distribution and rail hub, with BNSF and Union Pacific yards handling freight from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Former industrial sites have been converted to office, warehouse and retail uses, including the Citadel Outlets on the Santa Ana Freeway, and the Commerce Casino is a major employer.
