Downey's economy shifted from aerospace manufacturing to healthcare, retail and public-sector employment; major employers include Kaiser Permanente, Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, PIH Health Hospital - Downey, Stonewood Center and Los Angeles County agencies. The former Rockwell/NASA plant has been redeveloped with a Kaiser hospital, the Downey Landing and Promenade at Downey retail centers and the Columbia Memorial Space Center. I-5, I-105 and I-605 run through or along the city, with I-710 just west.
