Gym and Fitness Center Cleaning Services
How gyms, studios and corporate fitness centers buy professional cleaning, what to settle in the contract and how to tell whether the service is working.

The short answer
Gym and fitness center cleaning services usually combine three parts: a full clean of equipment, locker rooms and floors after close or overnight; daytime attendant or porter coverage at peak hours; and periodic floor care, upholstery cleaning and descaling. The right mix depends on the type of facility, its hours and how much daytime wiping members and staff already do. A good contract spells out who owns each task, which disinfectants suit the equipment and how results are checked.
Different fitness facilities, different cleaning needs
A boutique cycling studio and a round-the-clock gym share some surfaces and almost nothing else. Before asking for proposals, be clear which kind of facility you run and where its pressure points are.
| Facility type | Typical hours | Cleaning priorities |
|---|---|---|
| Large and 24-hour gyms | Open around the clock or nearly so | Zone-based overnight cleaning, heavy locker room use, large rubber floors |
| Boutique studios | Class blocks with short gaps | Turnovers between classes, studio floors, bikes and props |
| Corporate fitness centers | Peaks before and after work | Showers and locker rooms, tied into the building's janitorial program |
| Hotel and resort fitness rooms | Guest hours, often all day | Presentation, towels and wipes, guest-facing detail |
| Community and campus recreation centers | Long public hours | Multipurpose floors, restrooms, high-traffic entries |
Three layers of gym and fitness center cleaning services
The overnight or after-close clean is the foundation. Every machine, bench and mat is cleaned and disinfected, locker rooms are scrubbed, and floors are cared for by type. In a facility that never closes, the crew works zone by zone, coning off one area at a time and saving loud machine work for the quietest hours.
Daytime coverage is the layer members notice. An attendant or porter restocks wipe stations, dries floors, checks locker rooms and responds to spills during the morning and evening peaks. The periodic layer covers machine scrubbing of rubber floors, studio floor recoating, upholstery cleaning, descaling showers and high dusting, booked on a calendar so it does not get skipped.
What to settle in the scope before work starts
Most disputes between gyms and cleaning contractors come from tasks nobody assigned. Settle these in writing:
- Who restocks wipe stations and who disinfects equipment between members
- Which disinfectants your equipment manufacturers approve for upholstery and consoles
- Whether the crew moves equipment to clean underneath, and which pieces are too heavy
- Towels and laundry: the crew collects bins, but who washes them
- Pool decks, saunas and steam rooms: what the crew cleans, while water chemistry stays with the pool service
- Equipment upkeep such as belt lubrication and repairs stays with the equipment technician
- Lockers: exteriors and vacant lockers only, never members' rented lockers
- Access codes, alarm procedures and the hours each zone can be closed
- How damaged equipment, torn upholstery and plumbing problems are reported

How to judge a gym cleaning company
Ask how the company handles high-moisture rooms and rubber flooring, and listen for specifics: neutral cleaners on rubber, squeegeeing and ventilation in showers, label contact times for disinfectants. A contractor that treats a gym like an office will leave locker rooms smelling within weeks.
Then look at scheduling, supervision and screening. The company should offer overnight and split shifts, show you how it inspects and records the work, and explain how member complaints reach the supervisor. Because members leave bags and belongings in locker rooms, background-checked staff and clear key control matter more here than in many offices.
Fitness center cleaning in Southern California
The climate shapes the job. Many facilities have outdoor training yards, turf areas or open roll-up doors that let in dust and leaves, and those spaces need their own cleaning line. Summer work on outdoor areas in the Inland Empire and the Coachella Valley has to follow Cal/OSHA's heat rule for outdoor workers in section 3395 of Title 8. Near the coast, sand tracked in from the beach scratches floors and clogs shower drains, and desert resort fitness rooms get their heaviest use in the cooler months.
How EBS approaches fitness facilities
EBS Maintenance builds fitness cleaning from services it already runs every day: nightly janitorial, day porters, disinfection with EPA-approved products, and floor and carpet care, the same programs it offers to sports and entertainment venues. Service windows run from daytime through overnight, weekends included, and every crew member is trained, vetted and background-checked first. Request a walkthroughAll questionsShould a gym hire a cleaning company or use its own staff?
Many gyms do both. Front desk staff or attendants handle wipe stations and spot cleaning during open hours, while a contractor handles the nightly clean and periodic floor and locker room work, which need equipment, training and supervision that most gyms do not keep in-house.
Can a 24-hour gym be cleaned without closing?
Yes. The crew works one zone at a time with cones and signs, saves scrubbing and other loud work for the quietest overnight hours, and lets each floor dry before the area reopens. Locker rooms are usually cleaned one side at a time.
Do cleaning crews clean inside lockers?
Only vacant lockers and day-use lockers once they are empty. Rented or assigned lockers stay closed, and the crew cleans their exteriors, handles and the benches and floors around them. Put the locker rule in writing, and post it, so members know what to expect.
